It is so simple to make your very own laundry detergent with only two ingredients! Two! Why I began using this natural laundry detergent is again to eliminate all the chemicals from regular branded detergents!
I get mine at WinCo Foods when ever I am shopping for groceries. Both of the ingredients you can find in the laundry section of the store.
- Baking Soda-4lb box
- Borax-4lb box
- Bowl to mix it in
- 1 gallon zip-lock bag
- Something to mix it with
- Something where to keep it in
Mix those two ingredients together in a big bowl. *You may wish to wear a mask if you want to during mixing to avoid breathing it in. Whenever washing clothes, put one cup of that laundry mix in your washer machine. Mine is a front loader so I put it in the compartment made for detergents. You may want to use only 1/2 cup, see what you like best. For top loading washing machines it’s best if you hold the cup of mixture under the running water just after turning it on, that way the powder will distribute evenly over the clothes and will not have problems with rinsing it out at the end.
If using 1 cup of that laundry detergent it will last for up to 14-15 loads.
If using 1/2 cup of that laundry detergent it will last for up to 28-30 loads
You may keep it in the small box, (big enough to fit it all) lined with a plastic bag, or any container that would work for you! I keep mine in a 1 gallon zip-lock bag inside the basket.
Costs to make- about $7.78
What is Borax:
Borax is a natural mineral (sodium tetraborate) which has been mined and used for thousands of years. It is safe to mix with chlorine bleach and detergents, and it enhances their actions.
Increases the stain-removal ability of your detergent: Pre-soak your laundry for 30 minutes in a solution of a tablespoon of borax per gallon of warm water or a 1/2 cup of borax in the washer machine in a pre-soak cycle. The alkaline pH of borax helps break down acidic stains, such as tomato or mustard.
Disinfects clothing-Borax prevents many organisms that my be on your clothes, including fungi.
Neutralizes laundry odors-Borax inhibits fungi, which often grow in the moist environment of your washing machine and can give it a moldy odor. It also helps get rid of ammonia odor in baby fabrics, diapers, bed pads and incontinence pads. Borax can also prevent enzymes that produce body odor that can stick to workout clothing and the underarm areas of shirts for good.
Softens hard water-Borax has a high pH (measure of the acidity and alkalinity of water). It softens water to a pH of about 8. A neutral pH is 7. Borax is a buffering agent, which keeps the water at the best pH for cleaning action
Whitens your white clothes with out whitening your dark clothes – Borax converts some of the water molecules to hydrogen peroxide, which is a whitening agent. Borax enhances the action of bleach, whether you add it separately or it is present in your laundry detergent.
Makes whites whiter and brights brighter. (Same as borax)
Softens water and softens fabrics naturally! (Same as borax)
Keeps clothes fresh and clean (as well as borax)
So when two of those ingrediends are combined it becomes a beautiful harmony of a good quality, all natural, mineral based laundry detergent!!! Chemicals free!!!
